Character Details
Physical Description:
Hair Color: A very startling shade of ginger
Eye Color: A strange blue color which gets more grey the closer they get to the pupil.
Height and Build: Standing at about 5’6, Mary doesn’t look very intimidating. She is thin, almost boyish in appearance, and lacks the curves and womanly figures most of the girls in her year seem to have developed. She doesn’t seem at all fazed with this fact, however, and fancies herself a bit of a late bloomer.
Basic Description:
Close your eyes and picture for a moment, a stunningly beautiful and curvaceous witch with hair of fire-colored silk and eyes that sparkle like the waves under the afternoon sun. Got a mental image yet? Good. Now, just imagine the exact opposite of that and you have darling little Mary down to a T.
It wouldn’t be much of an exaggeration to say that Mary, much like her name, is an extremely plain girl. In fact, the only thing about her appearance that causes her stand out at all is her wild red hair. Other than that, there isn’t much to set her apart from any other face you see in the crowd, easily overlooked and quickly forgotten.
Cursed with rather pale and pasty skin, it also isn’t hard to see why Mary shies away from the sun and all outdoor activities; the poor girl burns something terrible if left out in the heat too long, so it is incredibly difficult to tell where her hair starts and her face ends. Freckles dashed randomly around her cheeks and slightly crooked nose complements the typical ‘redhead’ look, giving her the appearance of a badly aged piece of fruit. Keeping to traditional redhead stereotypes, Mary is also extremely prone to blushing. In fact, if one was just introduced to her, they might assume that scarlet was her natural skin tone.
Dressing Style: If it’s clean, comfortable, and isn’t moving, she’ll wear it. It isn’t what’s ‘in’? So what? Doesn’t match? Who cares? Mary isn’t nearly as obsessed over looks as most of her classmates, and feels that it’s rather stupid to fuss over appearances. Most days she doesn’t even pay attention when she puts on her clothes, her mind is usually to busy wandering to various other places. As a result of this, many people have been led to the incorrect assumption that the girl is colorblind; she has, on numerous occasions, walked out the dormitory with insanely loud colors that renders onlookers temporarily blind, completely oblivious to the affect she was causing. Her clothes have often earned her quite a few strange looks and glares. Does she seem to care? Not in the slightest.
Her hair, on the other had, is an entirely different cup of tea. If one were slightly offended by her wardrobe, they would be absolutely appalled by the state of her curly red tresses. Often, she simply lets it be, not bothering to force a brush through the stuff. Consequently, this leads it to form unnatural styles, twirling around her head like a twisted halo of fire. Other times, she manages to get it in a decent attempt of a bun, her wand lunged deep into it, holding the hairstyle together.
When she’s working on some new project, it is normal to see her face and hair completely covered in what seems to be car exhaust. Asking her to wear make-up? Well, let’s just say that there are some things best not attempted.
Personality Description:
While her appearance may suggest otherwise, Mary is very far from ordinary. She is an extremely brilliant witch, and the fact that she can think so creatively and inventively is on of her greatest assets. With a near-genius way of thinking that sometimes borders on insanity (and often coincides with it) she is always churning out strange but helpful new inventions and spells, ones that she hopes will someday revolutionize both the magical and muggle worlds. Some might call her eccentric (and they would be correct), but when they consider that her heart is almost always in the right place, her few oddities can be easily overlooked. Mary will accomplish much with her open and logical mind, entertaining complex and scientific ideas for the betterment of all. That said, she is also artistic and thoughtful; thinking inside of the box has never been her forte.
There is, however, more to her than just the mad scientist bit. At her core, she is much like the rest of her peers in terms of attitude, simply seeking acceptance when it's all said and done with. She may not be exceptionally witty or outgoing, but she is a good listener and a reliable person. She will eagerly lend out a hand or her heart to someone she cares about, often getting hurt in the process but never regreting a thing. In general, Mary is odd and softspoken, brilliant and shy, sheltered and naive. She is humanitarian, philanthropic and keenly interested in making the world a better place.
Unfortunately, while the girl is undeniably smart, one has never accused her of being the most approachable person in the world. While the loud explosions and strange smells that usually accompany the girl keep most people away, it is her lack in people skills that essentially does it. Growing up in small town Wyoming where the only forms of entertainment were a black-and-white television set and a toaster has left her with awful people skills, making it hard for her to make friends or hold a conversation for longer than a few minutes. She seems to be unaware that normal people usually do not care to discuss the complex mechanism that is the battery, or which spells will allow a person to transfigure their feet into blocks of cheese.
She also has a rather annoying knack of believing herself right in any situation, and will argue her point to the death. Naysayers will quickly find that Mary can be impatient, even temperamental, with those who disagree. Yes, she can be quite fixed in her opinions, and her always-right attitude can be insufferable at times, which could also be the reason for her lack of friends. She definitely has a talent for presenting new ideas, but her approach may be a bit off-putting.
There are also set backs to being a plain Jane in a sea of beauty queens. As much as she claims that she doesn't really care about outward beauty, that it's what's inside that truely counts, Mary is still a teenage girl. She seems to collect insecurities like stamps, each one of her so-called flaws being piled one on top of the other. Her hair, the true bane of her existance, is seemingly immune to all types of modifiction, whether it be magical or muggle. According to her, her skin has no color, her body has no curves, her personality has no redeeming qualites, and she will never be accepted. Truth of the matter is, nobody in this world is perfect; Mary just hasn't seemed to realize this yet.
Greatest Character Strength: I would have to say her creativity and innovation. When she gets any kind of idea in her head, she is definitely a forced to be reckoned with.
Worst Character Flaw: Her social skills, or lack thereof. It’s not that she’s antisocial, it’s just that anyone with good sense and a normal attention span steer clear of her.
Family Background and Childhood
Location of Home Residence: Hatsfied, Wyomming
Academy Funding: Her parents, although they are unaware of their daughter's extra 'talents' and think they’re paying for the very prestigious Maine School of Science and Mathematics. Funny what a few concealment charms and a very accepting Nana can accomplish.
Family Background:
Owen Grey (father, 48, accountant, squib)
McKenzie Feldman-Grey (mother, 46, district prosecutor, muggle-born)

All through her childhood, she was a very strange child, more interested in the inner workings of her mother’s watch than she ever was with Malibu Barbie. While most kids were learning the hockey pokey and eating their own buggers, Mary was learning the basics of electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. She had no time for silly cartoons and toys, and instead poured over her fathers physics books and scoured the television set for documentaries. Her parents would often find her in some corner of the house building some small gadget out of cardboard and an old alarm clock, or dissecting one of her father’s calculators. If it worked electronically and was within arms reach, you can believe Mary would find a way to get to it.
From the first day of grammar school, however, the other children made her realize that she was not like they were. The elementary school she attended was very small, about ten to a class, so everyone interacted with everyone else. One girl in particular, Amber James, teased her mercilessly all through the years they were there. Her raggedy-Ann appearance made her stick out like a sore thumb, yes, but her unusually behavior made it all the more worse. Will others were finger painting pictures of their houses and family, Mary was drawing up strange designs for new creations. She would always where the oddest clothes, or talk about things they couldn’t yet comprehend, so she was immediately deemed the outcast.
No one wanted to play with “Scary Mary”, no one wanted to be the one that had to be paired up with such a weird girl. The other kids avoided her like she was a fresh batch of broccoli they were made to eat, something that Mary was painfully aware of. She would often try to strike up conversations with one of the girls, but all to no avail. She would live out the rest of her days in Grammar school alone, the outsider looking in.
Her life at St. Merlin, a small wizarding school not far from Cheyenne, wasn’t much better. She transferred out and enrolled herself in Kameons after third year under the guise of attending a prestigious magnet school in Maine, and continued her schooling there. Much to Mary’s relief, Kameons was far better than she expected. The students there were far more mature and tolerant of her eccentricities than at St. Merlin’s, even going so far as to leave her be most of the time. Sure, she still received teasing and insults on a regular basis, but no it was more subtle and hushed up than before. No one really gave her much grief, and for that much she was grateful. She is still an odd-one-out in most senses of the word, but she really hadn’t expected much more.
Here, as well, her thirst for knowledge took flight. She took very well to the courses, even making more of an attempt at Potions. Eventually, she blossomed and grew as a scholar and a young woman, becoming much more comfortable with herself and her surroundings. She found inexplicable security and ease within these walls, something she had not felt in years.
