Physical Description: Nearly everyone can tell upon spending a minute in Esther's presence that she spends far too much time indoors; it is quite evident that she would look at home in the library. She gives off the distinct impression of a plant kept alive by artificial sunlight. Ugly and wilted? No, definitely not. But the words "sheltered" and "homeschooled" definitely come to mind. To be fair, her appearance has also been called "innocent" and "sweet", and honestly so.
Her mother's biggest disappointment is that Esther inherited her father's darker skin tone and honey-colored, long-lashed eyes. That may not sound like a disappointment, but to her mother's obsessive and slightly twisted Baptist beliefs (hence the name "Esther"), giving birth to a pretty girl is one of the most horrifying things that could hapen. Even when forced to wear her thick, wavy reddish brown hair back in a tight bun and put the most awful glasses her mother could find over her bright eyes, it wasn't long after Esther hit puberty that the neighborhood boys began to drop by while her father was at work (although her mother chased them off quite effectively). It also wasn't too long after Esther came to Kameons that she learned how to charm her glasses into an accessory she is not embarassed to wear in public, and to figure out that she only really needed them for reading.
Esther isn't very tall, topping the tape at 5'4", and she is rather skinny. She doesn't have a lot of cleavage to boast of, but she has a curved figure on the whole and if she ever figured out how to carry herself she would probably look a lot better. However, Esther tends to walk rather as a skittish horse does: although she is going at a normal pace, she is a bit jumpy and wide-eyed and looks ready to flee at the slighest advance. She has, over the years, accumulated a collection of what at her house would surely be forbidden clothing...although in truth, even the uniform skirt would probably not pass her mother's inspection. She loves to throw on shorts and a tank top for pajamas; it makes her feel almost as rebellious as her stash of makeup, which her Aunt bought for her with the full knowledge that her mother would have an absolute fit if she knew. When simply lounging around, she can usually be found in a pair of comfy sweatpants or jeans and a t-shirt. She also loves wearing sundresses when the weather is warm enough to call for it. For the most part, she follows the school's dress code to a "T", not seeing any good enough reason to break the rules.
Personality Description: Esther is definitely more the type of girl to duck and cover her face when a flying object comes her way than she is the type of girl to catch it. She'd also no sooner think of approaching someone than she would jumping off a cliff. That's not to say that she's a complete wimp, though. Her temper once roused is somewhat of a fantastic thing to watch. A lifetime during which much was spent reading has given her the ability to articulate arguments very clearly and logically a good majority of the time (if she likes you, she'll start you off with silent treatment until you bother her into talking). She doesn't scream, which is a plus, but she has, on occasion, been known to throw things with deadly aim when words fail her. That being said, she still definitely isn't the type to ever start an argument or a fight, but she can rally with the best when called out.
Esther is the kind of girl who would love to be loud if only she dared. She grew up in a very strict religious household, and coming to Kameons has thrown her world completely upside-down. Every year that she returns to school she finds herself a bit more daring, a bit more outgoing, and more than a bit changed. Nevertheless, her upbringing has made her on her own a pretty natural rule-follower. She is reluctant to do anything that might get herself into trouble without very good cause, and she tries to deny herself the rush she feels from doing things her parents would consider rebellious. However, she has slowly begun to convince herself of different ways of reasoning around rules. For example, she will always obey curfew unless, let's say, she missed dinner because she was completing her homework. Therefore, she is still breaking curfew by leaving her dormitory to scrounge for food, but she's convinced it's for a noble reason: homework. Really, she gets a rush from breaking the rules and will purposely work on homework late...she just hasn't admitted it to herself.
Esther is really, in her deepest heart, a people pleaser. Perhaps it comes from years of working to meet her parents' expectations, or perhaps she would be that way even if her parents had no expectations at all. But she truly loves things like hearing a teacher compliment her on her work; it will be the thought of praise that keeps her going on a vicious essay all night. She also absolutely loves to be included in anything her friends are doing. While she personally may not care about the upcoming Quodpot game, she will join her friends in a heartbeat to attend simply for the friendship and fun of the event.
Although at first quiet and reserved, Esther opens up quickly to those who befriend her and is loyal to the last. Her trust is earned quite easily, which makes her both very gullible and very refreshing. Friendship is definitely one of the most important things in her life, which is sort of ironic since she had a lot of difficulties actually making friends when she arrived. She was raised with little company of children her own age, and was even more socially awkward her first year at Kameons than she is at the present. She was taught, in the old-fashioned sense, not to speak unless spoken to, and then not to speak any more than is absolutely necessary. However, she hesitantly began to realize that these are values America's magical youth think they can quite do without and she has learned not only to flow through conversations that may be about nothing in particular, but to have great fun doing so.
Esther really wants, more than anything, to escape the rigid world she was brought up in and just fit in somewhere else. However, she is unsure of how to change herself completely from the person she was brought up to be, and not at all certain that she is brave enough to make the change. As her life changes from the eleven year old she was when she first came to Kameons and veers toward adulthood, she hopes that she will find a niche where she can be satisfied with herself and her life. She does recognize the immense changes she has to make, taking herself from a world memorizing Bible verses to a world memorizing spells. Though she knows she much prefers the magical world, it does sometimes cause her to feel lonely, as if she is part of two worlds, neither where she fully belongs. In the world she came from, she had nothing to be excited for in life and felt trapped. In this world, she enjoys every day and feels she has inumerable options, yet she feels she has to change in order to fit in to this estate full of outgoing American teenagers. It is perhaps the biggest challenge in her life right now, but she is determined to overcome her own fears and make herself such a key part of the magical world that it will never be the same.
Greatest Character Strength: loyal

Family Background and Childhood
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Location of Home Residence: Ophir, Oregon
Academy Funding: her rich aunt pays her tuition
Family Background: Esther's muggle parents, Derek and Trudy Tillmaine, were a perfect match. In fact, they were so perfect that everyone in the small Baptist church ("Faith Bible Baptist Church") knew from the time they were children that they would end up married. They were not betrothed (shockingly), but it was just one of those things that happened exactly as it's supposed to. Derek courted Trudy for a period of six pure, abstinent months before they were married. Esther was concieved on their honeymoon. It was pure chance that she was their first and only child, because Derek and Trudy do not believe in birth control. It just happened that Trudy developed a tumor shortly after Esther was born that resulted in her becoming infertile. Derek and Trudy thanked the Lord that Trudy survived the surgery and focused their remaining efforts on raising their daughter in the most upright, holy way they could.
Esther never was a wild rebel. She accepted her parents' instruction although she wasn't as zealous about religion as they were. Even though she didn't enjoy reading and memorizing Bible verses, she learned to use what was supposed to be "alone time with God" in their backyard to run down the street to the local library and smuggle books of poetry, fantasy, adventure, and heroism into the house. She hid these books up in the attic, a place that her parents rarely entered and where ugly presents given by relatives resided. She would often prop herself up against a bronze Bhudda's fat belly (a statue given to them by her crazy but likeable Aunt Judy) and plug in an old lamp and read. It was a rebellion, in a sense, but so subtle that her parents never figured it out. Of course, this may have more to do with the fact that they liked to see only what they wanted.
Esther began showing definite signs of magical ability by age four. It began at mealtimes when she would levitate foods she didn't like away from her. Her parents were shocked and scared and, convinced that she was demon-possessed, took her to their pastor who became the reason her room had so many wooden crosses and crucifixes in it it began to look more like a forest than anything else, and also the reason her mother made her wear a large, ugly wooden cross around her neck until she was seven and it was deemed safe to take it off. Her parents also bought her a book called Godly Self-Control in Young Women, which she burned happily the moment she arrived at Kameons.
When Esther decided to go to Kameons, her parents were devastated and confused. Witchcraft was against all that their religion dictated, and they felt they could take no part in it even if they could have afforded it. However, Esther's Aunt Judy happily offered to pay the tuition. Aunt Judy often had often hosted Esther over the summers of her childhood, and Esther loved it at her house - it was a place of freedom where she was allowed to leave the house, to wander the Oregon coastline with books of poetry and fantasy in her hand. Esther's parents did not kick her out when she came to Kameons, but they did insist that no spellbooks, wand, or anything associated in any sense with witchcraft enter their home. And so it just sort of came about that Esther now spends the majority of her holiday time at her Aunt Judy's, which she much prefers in any case. She still visits her parents on Christmas holidays and a couple of weeks in the summertime and they tend to get along quite well pretending that there is no such thing as magic for that short amount of time, but overall her life has taken a turn very much for the better now that she is living with her Aunt Judy.
Pet Registration
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pet Species: mouse
Pet’s Name: Odysseus ("Odie")
Pet’s Gender: male
Pet’s Physical Description: Odysseus is rather small, even for a mouse. However, he is impeccably cared for and therefore has a rather lush, shiny white coat and his small stature certainly is not due to a lack of food. He is actually quite fluffy and cuddly looking.
Pet’s Personality Description: Odysseus seems to have forgotten his humble beginnings when Esther rescued him from floating down a drainpipe on a torn box of cereal. He is a bit conceited and often grooms himself or crawls onto the pages of Esther's open book if he feels he is not getting enough attention. Although he has not been proven to have any magical powers, he seems to know when others make fun of him - whether it's because he squeaks or due to his runty stature, and he has been known to leave the offender who points out any faults out a few "special mouse pellets." He used to like to sit in the front pocket of Esther's vest or blouse until she realized that a few people got the impression that her right breast could move of it's own accord. Now he is demoted to riding around on top of or inside her bag, or occasionally her shoulder.
